RENTAL OPTIONS
Some of our guests take full board because they just love to spend their time at Treehouse and really like the healthy, fresh and light food we serve. Others like half board – they have breakfast and one other meal at Treehouse and explore other places in Watamu for the other meal. There are a number of options. And others book half board and end up eating extra meals here on a pay-as-you-go basis. Your choice.
As Treehouse is a very ‘open house’, we request groups that will respect the privacy of others in other rooms. Most of our guests come to relax and recharge and we have quite a quiet environment. So if you are coming for big celebrations, late night music etc, we recommend renting the entire house for your group, or staying elsewhere. Also note that Treehouse is a smoke-free environment – we do have nice places in the compound where smokers can congregate.
COVID POLICY
We have updated our normally strict cancellation policy so that if travel becomes impossible because governments close borders or airlines cancel flights, or if we have to close because of covid-19 reasons, you will be able to adjust your dates without penalty. This excludes cancellation for personal reasons or induvial illness, and in these cases our normal cancellation policy applies.

Expand your horizons,
discover natural wonders in Watamu
Although you might not want to leave Treehouse, we suggest you try out some these energising and safe adventures in Watamu, two of which are Kenya’s Signature experiences by the Kenya Tourism Board:
Mida Creek Nature Reserve
Mida Creek is one of the richest jewels in the Watamu area, and some of the most unique activities are our guided trips in Mida – on Kayaks, Stand Up Paddleboards (SUP), walking, swimming or floating with the tides. The best ways to explore the creek - peacefully paddling and swimming in unspoiled nature. And you get a good workout too!
Stand-Up Paddleboard Trips (SUP)
Stand Up Paddleboards (SUPs) are a great way to see Watamu, get somewhere, and get in touch with your abdominal muscles! We design our trips so you ‘go with the flow’ - aided by the tides and the winds. So absolute beginners can do it. Our trips let you explore the channels, and do unique swims and walks in the creek.
Kayak trips
For all levels of paddling experience … we have fast kayaks, stable kayaks and double kayaks so you can even sit in the front and be paddled by one of our guides. You can kayak the length of Mida Creek, enjoy sundowners or the moonrise on the water, or even paddle into town for a morning coffee.
Mida float and nature walk
Our most popular activity, but it only happens a few days a month! Just after full moon or new moon – during the spring tides – you have a tidal situation where water rushes out of Mida Creek and out to the sea - very quickly. You can join us for a ‘float’ – where you enter the water in a small channel in the mangroves and float with the outgoing tide….. In 2018, the Kenya Tourism Board / Expedia included the Mida Float with Treehouse in “The Ultimate 5 day Itinerary for Kenya”
Nature and cultural walks
Explore the back-roads of Watamu with a local guide and learn about the Watamu village way of life. Have you ever climbed a coconut tree? Do you know how local coconut palm leaves are used to make roofs so strong they withstand storms? Or why locals have the strongest whitest teeth even though most of them don’t own toothbrushes?
Snorkelling & dolphin boat
All year round you can snorkel at the Coral Gardens almost directly in front of Treehouse. And at certain times of year, you can go looking for dolphins. Treehouse guides will take you snorkelling by kayak, paddleboard, swimming - or you can go on a boat. You will see thousands of colourful fish and other interesting aspects of nature.
Yoga on SUPs
This activity includes a yoga class taught on a SUP (stand up paddleboard). It takes place either in the ocean or in Mida Creek, depending on the conditions, and is usually combined with a SUP trip. No experience in SUP or Yoga are required to do this activity. A sense of balance is good but a sense of humour is better.
Arabuko-Sokoke Forest
The largest stretch of dry coastal forest remaining in Eastern and Southern Africa, covering an area of 420km2, Arobuko-Sokoke comprises an ecosystem of great diversity, containing many rare species of birds, butterflies, amphibians and plants. introduction to the forest, a series of walking and driving through the forest to look for birds, insects, trees and larger mammals. Treehouse’s Arabuko tri takes approximately 3-4 hours
Trips to Crab-Shack
The Crabshack is a favourite destination of our guests. The restaurant - run by the Mida Creek Conservation Community - sits on the edge of the mangroves on Mida Creek. The unique experience includes a boardwalk over the mangroves, excellent fresh seafood from the creek and an ideal place for viewing the sunset. Treehouse guests can get there by kayak, SUP or walking - or use a Tuk Tuk.
Sundowners with a view
Treehouse guests have a number of great places to experience the sunset, including their rooms. The yoga room - the highest point in Watamu - is top of the list. Or on the water at the end of a paddleboard or SUP Trip. On the right day you can combine sunset with a moonrise and paddle home in the moonlight.
Walks or Runs
If you are a walker or a runner, we are happy to take you on some of our favourite tours - or give you directions if you prefer to explore on your own. Our favourite walks/runs:
At sunset through the coconut plantations and villages to end up on a quiet cove beach for sundowners over the water
Magical walks through the mangroves - ending up in the creek or the Crabshack restaurant
Walks in the forest nearby, making sure you steer clear of elephants
5.5 Km all on the beach to town for a coffee / gelato
Magical Kenya - Signature Experiences
Magical Kenya Signature Experiences Collection are curated unique, authentic and exceptional once in a lifetime Kenyan travel experiences. In 2021, three of the Treehouse experiences were among the 29 experiences in the country that were added to the Collection.

“Treehouse is unlike any other beach accommodation we have experienced. The beautiful open plan rooms with stunning views are perfect. The fresh and delicious food, served with a smile, kept us always interested to discover what treats were coming next. The location meant that our family of four (with two teenagers) could do activities independently of each other, and there were lots to do, while still being close by. We just didn't want to leave and can't wait to come back again.”

This video is an incredible blog post of Treehouse through eyes of 11 year old: Best Days Ever in Watamu - she really got it!
The first version of Treehouse was created in 1992 by Nani Croze of Kitengela Glass as a single-room home where the Krystall family came for their school holidays. They would spend ‘endless summers‘ on the beach and in the forest, full of nature adventures, healthy-food, and yoga.
Eric Krystall – the mzee (family elder) – was swimming 4 hours a day up to the age of 88, though he has now slowed down just a little bit!
Whenever funds were available, Paul Krystall extended and expanded the house to make room for friends and guests. The house was always filled – first with children, and later with teenagers. The family organised adventure activities, yoga and meditation in the most beautiful parts of Watamu, With an emphasis on safety and ability to deliver drinks and food to the most remote locations.
Building has taken place on the small footprint in the forest that was cleared for utility use by the previous owners. No trees were cut down in the process. The unique building style of using local materials to create a direct connection with nature was perfected by Sala Terrena Creative Construction, and it complemented the recycled hand-blown glass from Kitengela Glass and Anslem’s Hot Glass.
In 2014 the pool and yoga studio were added and Treehouse became a year-round boutique hotel and retreat centre. Paul started running Dru Yoga and Meditation retreats with his daughter Aja, and partner Vera. In 2017 Treehouse started hosting other teachers’ retreats as a core-business. In 2018, a second yoga room and massage room were added to meet the demand. And so it continues....
