Meet your teacher for this retreat, Nina Butler.

My yoga journey was enriched by a Sivananda Vedanta IYA certified yoga instructor course in Vrindavan, India. I then taught Hatha yoga classes in Grahamstown, South Africa, for several years whilst completing my postgraduate qualifications at Rhodes University to a diverse range of students, elderly, beginners and more advanced yogis.

In 2012 I travelled to Mysore and trained in a traditional Mysore-style Ashtanga shala. I incorporate teachings from this experience, as well my intuitive body and mind awareness into my unique style of yoga practice. I was based in Durban from 2014 - 2016, where I specialised in private classes for clients of all ages with specific ailments and needs. In this time I volunteered for the Township Yogi Project, teaching yoga at a TB Clinic in Inanda township. This focused instruction deepened my knowledge of the many health benefits of yoga, and refined my attention to alignment and posture. Moreover, it moulded my understanding of daily practice as an expression of gratitude for our vital being and a practical means to restore this vitality.

“Yoga is mindful pattern recognition. From the balance of postures and sequences on the mat, a pattern is formed that expands into your everyday life. The 'yoga' of it is being conscious of these habits and routines, and then having the courage and patience to mould and develop them into a unique grand pattern that vibrates in symphony with you, your heart, your mind and your goals in life.”

-NINA BUTLER

Daily flow on safari

A dawn wake-up call and a private jeep safari drive through the Big Five conservancy. Upon return to the lodge, we enjoy a delicious breakfast. Then there is free time to rest, swim in the pool, spot wildlife nearby, or stroll on the lodge's self-guided nature trail. A healthy light lunch is served al fesco at midday.

After a leisurely siesta, we convene for our afternoon Vinyasa yoga session on our private viewing deck. We take an elegant high tea, then set out for our evening safari and stop for a majestic sundowner with a view.

The hours after sunset are for enjoying the profound relaxation that comes from living according to nature's cycle. We typically eat together al fresco under the glittering night sky. It is a calm time to share the experiences, insights, and joys of the day.

Retreat food

Both of our handpicked Kenyan locations pride themselves in their farm-to-table organic produce, and global flavours.

Sirikoi boasts over a hectare of fruit and vegetable gardens, as well as a fine selection of wines and spirits, served in style as a sundowner on a private jeep safari drive, or to perfectly pair with a three-course dinner under the stars.

Watamu Treehouse is famous for their vital vegetarian cuisine and seafood, made with love. Their lunches and dinners are abundant “set-meals” and always include a soup or starter, a vegetarian main course, a variety of sides and salads, and a dessert, fresh juice or coconut water and a variety of hot drinks after the meal.  Great for vegans, and gluten and dairy-free.
